In road maintenance task, even today, there is some uncertainty in deciding whether the pavement requires resurfacing of entire road or only few sections which are badly damaged. But this ambiguity can cost millions of dollars to tax payers. Until recent time, there was no automatic process to decide on the above ambiguity.
Researchers in Fraunhofer Institute, Germany along with Lehman + Partners of Germany, came out with a combination of Camera and LiDAR Systems to accurately investigate every meter of a road and comeout with suggestions on “Complete/partial/NoResurfacing “. This system also does the crack detection and allow the authorities to take preventive measure. This will save millions of Dollars to the department and in the same time provide accurate analysis of the road there by increasing the safety of commuters.
High Resolution Camera System mounted on a Mobile Van along with flash lights to help capturing during night Customized software for pavement condition analysis showing a 10m section coded with error types (left window), front view of road section for better understanding (center) and the last window showing the close up of road section (1mX1m) where the errors are analyzed and categorized.
